Shuttle bus
Four buses shuttle passengers between the remote parking area and the terminal buildings; the average waiting time is no more than six minutes a trip. The buses can accommodate standing passengers, seated passengers and people in wheelchairs. The remote parking areas are fitted with intercoms linked to ACSA's joint operations centre, which allows passengers to contact the helpdesk.
Paying for parking
The airport's pay-on-foot system, in use since March 1999, reduces queues and speeds up the payment process. ACSA has strategically positioned 38 pay stations in all of the parking areas.
You pay by:
taking your parking ticket with you when leaving your vehicle; inserting your ticket and the required amount at the pay station; retrieving your ticket and returning to your vehicle; and inserting your ticket at the exit to open the boom.
The system accepts cash and credit cards, but a credit card limit does apply. Garage and petrol cards will not be accepted. Parking tariffs are listed here.
If you need help, the pay stations and ticket feeders at the entrances and exits have intercoms linked to operators in the parking control room. Press the "help" button for assistance.

SpeedPark Gold offers many benefits, such as:
a free 15-minute period for drop-offs; convenient card recharging at the First Park offices on the first floor of the multi-storey parkade; and the possibility of cancelling stolen cards with one telephone call. ACSA parking management office: Tel +27 (0)11 921 6090/1.

OR Tambo International Airport (ORTIA) is the largest airport in South Africa and the air transport hub of Southern Africa. Aircraft are supplied with kerosene via a fuelling system which stretches from the fuel depot to the apron. This system must meet very high standards in two areas. Firstly, there is the need for system safety due to the extremely high potential hazards that fuel poses to people and the environment. Secondly, the system availability must meet the constant demand for aircraft fuel at a busy airport.
This system is now being reliably monitored by safety-related controllers from HIMA Paul Hildebrandt GmbH + Co KG, which is headquartered in Germany.
The ESD system (Emergency Shutdown System) from HIMA is replacing the old relay-based safety system, which was no longer able to meet the airport's expansion plans. Six safety-related controllers of type H41q (IEC 61508/SIL 3) are being used to meet the requirements of a safety-related network with Safe Ethernet. Safe Ethernet offers open communication and safe transmission of data via Ethernet, yet independent of the transmission medium. Safe Ethernet was developed by HIMA and is based on standard Ethernet.
The ESD system is monitoring a large number of shut-down valves, which are positioned in the feed pumps as well as zones along the fuel line in order to ensure safe shut-down in case of an emergency. Each of the six H41q systems processes approximately 70 safety-related signals and is responsible for monitoring one zone.
HIMA systems are integrated into the airport's "Infrastructure Management and Control System" (IMCS) via OPC (open connectivity via open standards). Furthermore, the safety controllers are connected to a SCADA system (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), which is used for visualising purposes, via an OPC interface. SCADA systems, also known as Human-Machine Interface (HMI), are large-scale, distributed measurement and control systems, typically used to monitor or control chemical, physical or transport processes.
The safety system from HIMA was chosen during the tender process because of its cost-effective advantages, the system's
