September 3, 2006 - From September 6 Continental Airlines lays on a third daily Austin to New York/Newark (EWR) nonstop. It’s a midday departure. Continental has added more first-class seats (and thus more opportunities to upgrade) on its 7am daily departure to its Houston Bush Intercontinental mega hub. What used to be a 167-seat 737 is now a 216-seat 757-300 with 22 seats up front.
March 21,2006 - Newark, Jersey is not a place travelers immediately associate with fine dining. Across the way in New York, sure, but not Newark. That may be because they don’t know where to go.
Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) offers some of the best food going - on-airport or off. The airport just won three first place awards in Airport Revenue News’ annual Best Airport Concessions Competition.
Gallagher’s Steakhouse and Famous Famiglia were singled out as prime places to eat at the international aerodrome.
With airlines cutting down on, or eliminating altogether, food back in coach, airport restaurants are enjoying a renaissance. More travelers are finding that if security and long lines mean that they show up two hours ahead of time to catch a flight, they might as well pamper themselves when they get to the airport. That means dining (not just wolfing down a sandwich) and shopping.
To that end, Airport Revenue News also recognized Newark’s Terminal C, operated by Continental Airlines, as having the Best Concessions Design, Best Customer Service, and Most Unique Services.
Passengers sometimes find themselves waiting at Newark for longer than at other international gateways. The airport continues to be plagued by delays, and has racked up one of the worst on-time performance records in the nation.
