A major upgrade of Melbourne Airport’s Long Term Car Park was opened this week, signalling a new era for Victorian travellers.
Included as part of the $10m upgrade are a fleet of state-of-the-art, Victorian-made buses, 900 new parking spaces, and air-conditioned bus shelters displaying live bus arrival times on electronic screens.
Melbourne Airport CEO Chris Barlow said the 21 million travellers using the airport each year deserved a first class parking service to and from the airport terminal that was affordable.
“As our outbound traveller numbers continue to increase, Melbourne Airport endeavours to improve all aspects of our car parking service,” said Mr Barlow.“The enhancements to our Long Term Car Park are great news for Victorian travellers, providing a seamless travel experience from the moment they arrive at the airport.”
“We consulted extensively with our customers how to improve our Long Term Car Park. The priorities were to increase comfort, reliability and frequency of shuttle services. Customers also want to bring luggage on board, rather than use the luggage trailers our previous shuttles were equipped with. We’ve delivered all of those things with this enhancement.”
“With a price of just $69 for week’s stay, parking at Melbourne Airport’s Long Term Car Park is cheaper than a cab fare to and from the Melbourne CBD,” added Mr Barlow.
Melbourne Airport’s $10m enhancement of its car parking facilities follows extensive research of Long Term Car Park users. Research showed that a key need for users was to be able to park within the airport precinct itself – and not offsite – enabling a quicker trip to the terminal door.
The $10 million enhancement program includes an all new courtesy shuttle bus fleet, 900 new car parking spaces, as well as a range of other facilities such as air conditioned bus shelters, and GPS-enabled car park user display systems.
The new fleet of Victorian-built, purpose-designed buses are capable of carrying 50 people at a time.
Operating 24 hours, seven days a week, the dual-door, low-floor buses are complete with CCTV facilities and improved on-board luggage storage and providing seating more akin to business-class airline services. The buses commenced operations this week and will provide even faster pick up times for users of the Long Term Car Park.
