Melbourne - Introduction

Melbourne is the capital of the Australian state of Victoria; it is the country’s second largest city and home to 4 million people of various backgrounds, Italians, Vietnamese, Chinese, Greek, English, Scottish and Irish to name a few .

It is located on the south-eastern tip of mainland Australia, along a large natural bay called Port Phillip. The city center is laid out in a grid pattern and is easy to navigate.

Melbourne is regarded as Australia’s most cultured and sophisticated city, home to many and varied galleries, museums and theaters. Melbourne has a very European feel to it as there are trams traversing the streets, lots of parks, Victorian buildings, and outdoor cafés.

All sorts of daytrips are possible from Melbourne, the most popular being the picturesque drive along the great Ocean Road, known as the great southern touring route which takes in some of the most scenic sights in Victoria.

The city plays a host to a vast number of festivals and events, including the Melbourne Cup, Australian Open Tennis and Qantas Australia Grand Prix.
